Homeless households down by a quarter (Refuge / Emergency Accommodation)

by administrator @, Friday, June 12, 2009, 14:14

Households accepted as homeless are down by more than a quarter, according to government figures out today.

The new figures issued by the department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) show the number of people accepted as homeless by local authorities in England was down 26 per cent on last year.

Between January and March the numbers fell to 11,350, down from 15,430 last year. The largest year on year decrease in the number of households in temporary accommodation was also highlighted in the figures, which had reduced by 17 per cent.

However, there were still some 64,000 households in temporary accommodation at the end of March this year. The government's target is to reduce the number of households in temporary accommodation to 50,500 by next year.
